Frequently Asked Questions

This section is dedicated to those questions we get asked over and over. There is no such thing as a bad question, but there is such a thing as "clever responses".

If your question is not answered here, please either post in our Facebook group, or contact us using the form above.

  • Where do you meet?
See our weekly runs page for a full breakdown. However, our fixed Tuesday and Thursday sessions start at Craven Cottage. However, there are a variety of sessions posted each week on our Facebook Group.
  • What time do you meet?
See our weekly runs page for an overview of sessions. Our Facebook group is the best way to find out about the latest sessions.
  • When are your sessions?
See our weekly runs page for an overview of sessions. Our Facebook group is the best way to find out about the latest sessions.
  • Do I have to be a "good" runner to join?
We welcome runners of all abilities and capabilities. Even if you can't participate in our 10 km longer runs, we have shorter sessions such as Thursday's Club Run or Tuesday intervals to improve your speed and stamina.
  • I'm not sure I can keep up / run the required distance. What should I do?
First of all... Don't worry - we welcome runners of all abilities and capacities. If you're not sure you can keep up with the longer runs, there are shorter sessions such as Thursday's Club Run or Tuesday intervals to improve your speed and stamina. At these sessions, you can meet new people who may be around your abilities, so you can support each other.
  • Is there somewhere to leave my belongings at your sessions?
At the moment we do not have a secure place at almost all of our sessions. For intervals, you are able to leave them on the ground in the park, or nearby at the track, but it is at your own risk (basically, think carefully about bringing your fancy designer bags). For other sessions, please come ready to run.
  • Do you offer coaching sessions?
Yes, we offer a variety of coaching sessions for EA members, including short-, mid- and long-distance, trails and much more! We also have a number of qualified coaches who can help you improve your running technique. For these sessions, you will need to be England Athletics registered. Find out more on our membership page.
  • I'm really excited to join the club, but I'm worried I'm too slow for your Thursday club run. What's the minimum pace?
Don't worry, our Thursday club run is social, so we have people of all different paces. For the shorter distance (4 miles or 6.5km), we suggest that you can run a 5km / parkrun in about 35 minutes (7:00 min/km or 11:16 min/mile). If you're not sure if you can do that yet, don't worry! We also offer Tuesday interval sessions to help you improve your speed. We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable on our club runs, so please don't feel like you have to be the fastest runner. Just come along and have fun!
  • Do you allow runners under the age of 18?
Unfortunately not. Fulham Running Club is a 18+ club only for insurance purposes, even if accompanied by an adult. If you are looking for an under 18 club near you, Run & Become lists all the London junior running clubs!
  • Do I have to register to join?
You don't need to register to join our regular sessions, we're absolutely free to join - just show up! We do offer an England Athletics membership option which gives you a range of benefits including discounts, free/discounted entry into races, access to coaching plans and much more. Find out more on our memberships page.
  • How can I get the latest information if I'm not on Facebook?
Our Facebook group is the best way to get the latest information about upcoming races, training runs, and other club events. However, we do aim to post some information on our website, so check news for updates. If you would like to join our Facebook group, please provide a reason why you want to join (e.g., "I want to run with you"). Otherwise, your request will not be approved.
  • How do I get your fancy kit?
There are two ways to get our kit. The first is through our kit page, which shows you the latest kit and stock available. In addition, PB Teamwear has some of our secondary kit available.
  • I've haven't been accepted onto your Facebook group - why?
If you would like to join our Facebook group, please provide a reason why you want to join (e.g., "I want to run with you"). If it is left blank your request will not be approved.
  • I've attended several sessions and would like to give back - can I be a session leader?
Of course! Always! And definitely! As Fulham Running Club is run by volunteers, the more the merrier! Simply let us know which session you want to volunteer for, and we'll be happy to put you in touch with the host for that evening. We do have a checklist of things that need to be covered at each session, so no need to worry about starting from scratch.
  • I would like to volunteer for a role - how do I do that?
Great news! We're always looking for volunteers to help out with our club. There are a variety of roles available, such as session leaders, committee members, and event organisers. If you're interested in volunteering, please contact us using the form on our site or get in touch with one of the ExCo / Leadership team.
  • What do I need to cover as a Session Leader?
As a session leader, you need to cover the following points in each session: Welcome everyone and introduce yourself. Ask new joiners to quickly introduce themselves. Provide an overview of announcements and ask if there are any more. Explain the session, including the intervals or routes. Introduce the backmarker and explain the concept of fishhooking (Thursday only). Provide a safety briefing, including watching out for non-runners, park users, cars, and wearing hi-vis clothing in winter. Tell the group that if anyone needs to leave before the end, they should let someone know. Ask if anyone has any questions. Take a team photo! Here are some other things you may want to discuss: If it's a Tuesday interval session, remind people that there are multiple sessions on Tuesdays. Remind people about England Athletics registration. It's £24 a year and you get a range of discounts, free entry in the Cross Country fixtures, and much more! Here are some additional tips for being a session leader: Be enthusiastic and positive. Be organised and prepared. Be patient and understanding. Be encouraging and supportive. Be a good role model.
  • I've seen you do cross country but I'm pretty sure it's not for me - am I right?
Wrong! Cross country is for everyone! Whether you're first, mid-pack or last, XC is a great way to improve your fitness and meet members of the club while getting muddy. Check out our cross country page for more.
  • How does team scoring work at cross country?
The team competitions in cross country are based on the finishing positions of the runners. The top 10 men and top 5 women from each club score on the day, and their points are added together to determine the winning team. The team with the lowest total wins the race. In the Surrey League, the top 2 men's teams and the top 3 women's teams are promoted to the next division, while the bottom 2 men's teams and bottom 3 women's teams are relegated. In championship races, the number of runners who score varies from race to race. Tips for scoring points for your team: Run your best race. The more points you score, the better your team's chances of winning. Encourage your fellow club members to run. The more runners your club has, the more points you can score. Be strategic about when to race. If you know you're not feeling well, it might be better to skip a race and save your energy for another one. Have fun! Cross country is a great way to get exercise and meet new people.
  • I'm injured - can you recommend any good local services?
We're sorry to hear you're injured. Members often ask for suggestions of both health professionals (e.g. physiotherapists, osteopaths, sports massage therapist, yoga instructors etc) and professional services (non-running related). Below are some of the friends of the club who are known to a number of members or are members themselves. (Please note that these are not officially endorsed or recommended by Fulham Running Club). • I'm running ABC race, how do I find out if anyone else is running it?
We have a forum on our website where you can post about upcoming races and see if anyone else is planning to run them. You can also ask in our Facebook group.
  • I'd like to promote my services, charity place, etc. - can I post on your Facebook page?
Typically the rule is "no promotion for profit" in our Facebook group, however there are sometimes partnerships and promotions we are happy to work on with local companies or race organisers. If you want to guidance, please use the contact form below and let us know what you are offering.

  • What is fish hooking?
Fish hooking is something we do on our Thursday club runs where - at three separate points - runners can add more distance by turning back the direction you came and running back towards the backmarker. Once you reach the backmarker, give them a high-five and turn back to the original direction. It's a great way to add distance to your runs, and also great encouragement for the backmarker!
