Autumn Stagger 2026: The Art of Chasing While Being Chased
Written by Rick Cannon, read about the Autumn Stagger 2026 and the thrilling fear of being chased down along the Thames Path. See how our runners tackled 6km of tactical running, relentless pursuit, and pure adrenaline!

On Thursday 10 September, 25 brave FRC runners gathered along the Thames Path for the return of our ever-popular Autumn Stagger. But this was no ordinary 5k. Despite runners submitting their official 5km Season's Best times to calculate their handicap start waves, the course actually stretched out to a gruelling 6km—adding an extra kilometre of sheer endurance to an already brutal test of speed and grit.
After a quick safety briefing, proceedings got underway at bang on 7:00 PM for an evening of relentless racing, friendly rivalry, and well-earned post-run drinks.
What is the Stagger?
The Stagger is an event where runners set off in waves based on their Season’s Best time—meaning the theory goes that everyone crosses the finish line together, and anybody can win! Because start times are staggered by pace, a 45-minute runner has the exact same shot at glory as a 20-minute runner. The challenge? Push yourself to a new Season's Best while chasing the runner ahead and holding off the one behind.

Drama on the path: The Stagger highlights
The story began with pioneer John Grigg, who stepped up to the line first and launched himself into the fading evening light as the rest of the field watched, waited, and plotted their hunt.
As wave after wave of runners were unleashed onto the path, the psychological war unfolded. Up front, a dramatic battle for overall handicap victory saw Katie Light, Gabe A, and Millie Hopkins digging deep into their reserves. Sprinting against the ticking clock and the sound of thundering footsteps closing in from behind, all three held their nerves to cross the line in a thriller finish to claim the top three handicap spots! 🏆
Meanwhile, further back in the pack, the speed demons were putting on an absolute clinic in relentless pursuit. Will Thompson tore through the field in a blistering actual time of 20:18 to take the crown as fastest male finisher, with Dylan Williams (21:16) and Graham Pattle (21:28) in hot, breathless pursuit to round out the men's speed podium.
In the women's field, Sophie McKeeman flew along the riverbank to clock a stunning 23:03 as the fastest female on the night, relentlessly pursued by Zoe Greenwood (25:02) and Millie Hopkins (25:30), who capped off an incredible evening by taking both a speed podium and a top-three overall finish!
