On Sunday 16 August, we took over Barn Elms for FRC Sports Day 2026—and it was every bit as chaotic, competitive, and fun as we had hoped. Four teams battled it out throughout the afternoon, with the Underdogs ultimately coming out on top. But before anyone could claim the ultimate glory, there was plenty of work to be done.

Old-school sports day classics

The afternoon kicked off with the traditionals: the egg and spoon race, sack race, three-legged race, and wheelbarrow race. There was plenty of questionable technique, some surprisingly serious strategising, and more than a few members discovering their coordination was not quite what they thought. Surprisingly, not a single egg was broken along the way.

Taking to the track

We then swapped sacks for trainers and headed onto the athletics track for the 100m, 400m, and relay events. Suddenly, the banter paused and the competitive side of FRC came out in full force. There were dip finishes, tactical masterpieces, personal bests, and an impressive amount of shouting from the sidelines.

A massive well done to our sprinting stars:

  • 100m male: Jonny

  • 100m female: Katie

  • 400m male: Marcus

  • 400m female: Alicia (awkward!)

Community, cake, and cheese

The whole afternoon struck a brilliant balance between an old-school primary sports day and a proper athletics meet—with a few classic FRC twists thrown in for good measure. Most importantly, the team spirit was unmatched. Members cheered each other on, helped run the events, and embraced the silliness, whether they were racing, keeping score, or just trying to figure out what was happening next.

A special shout-out goes to all the bakers who kept everyone fuelled with an impressive spread of homemade treats. A particular mention must go to Ed, who took athlete nutrition very seriously and arrived with an entire cheeseboard.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, competed, and helped bring the event to life.

We will be back next year—we might even know what we are doing by then! Same competitive spirit, even more chaos. 🖤🤍
