Ninth in the woods, fighting in the common: XC Match 3 Round-Up
- Fulham Running Club

The January cross-country fixtures provided two very different backdrops for our squads. While the men took to the runnable, dry paths of Oxshott Woods to defend their league position, the women battled a biting easterly wind and a double-hill challenge at Mitcham Common. It was a weekend defined by grit, debuts, and the looming reality of a high-stakes season finale.
The Men’s Race: The Oxshott Symmetries

Saturday 10th January at Oxshott Woods offered the sort of scene that makes trail shoes twitch: dry paths, mild air, and a course so runnable it practically whispered “go on then.” At 1pm the men’s race sprang to life—a forest full of flying elbows and hopeful ambitions.
Fulham Running Club arrived sitting ninth in the league, keen for a climb, craving a comeback, and generally revved for a rankings revival. Instead, we lodged ourselves firmly where we’d started: ninth on the day and ninth in the standings. Still, the squad showed immense gusto; twenty runners lined up in black and white, with nineteen finishing the woodland waltz after Alex Vanstone was forced to pull up early with an injury. We wish him a speedy recovery.
The effort across the board was bold, with tactical surges and lung-squeezing finishes through the Oxshott undulations. While we remain perched in ninth, all eyes now swivel toward the season’s grand finale at Lloyd Park on 7th February.
To stay afloat in the league, we need a Herculean effort. We must outscore Stragglers and Kingston & Poly by more than 200 points. It is a "do-or-die" day where we need every runner to turn up in numbers and give the performance of their lives. The woods have spoken, but the final reckoning awaits at Lloyd Park.
The Women’s Race: The Mitcham Great Escape
With temperatures at just two degrees and a cold easterly wind biting through the layers, Fulham’s women arrived at Mitcham Common ready for battle. Shivering over Alice Riddle-Webster’s flasks of tea and coffee (and a welcome selection of mince pies), the goal was to stay wrapped up until the very last second before heading to the start line.
The three-lap course was a true test of endurance, featuring a challenging double-hill section, road crossings, and slippery descents. Match 3 saw fantastic XC debuts from four new members, with a special mention to Sarah Bergin for completing the scoring team in her first season.
A massive shout-out goes to FRC’s XC Women’s Runner of the Year, Maddie Barrow, for her "sixth sense" cheering—somehow knowing exactly who was behind her to offer encouragement without ever breaking stride. We also owe a huge thanks to Imogen Shapland, who travelled to support despite being in recovery, and Tom Riddle-Webster for his consistent Saturday sideline support.
Through pure determination, the women have fought their way out of the relegation zone, finishing 10th out of 15 in this round. However, the job isn't finished. Our place in the Premier League will be bravely defended at the final round in Wimbledon Common. We go again!
The Grand Finale: We Need You!
The season comes down to this. Whether we’re fighting for a "Great Escape" at Lloyd Park or defending our Premier League status at Wimbledon Common, every single runner and every single point counts. Don't worry about being the fastest—cross country is a numbers game, and your finishing position could be the one that saves the club from relegation. Let’s finish the season with the biggest FRC turnout yet!
