After some exceptional performances from those running in Brighton, Milan and Manchester, all eyes turned to London, with a huge number of Bandits taking on 26.2 miles around the streets of our home city.
The pre-race ritual: Backwards FLAH and early breakfast
The day started bright and early, whilst our marathon runners tried to enjoy as much sleep as possible, a hardcore group of bandits made their way to Tower Bridge for 6am to complete the backwards FLAH (half), which involves completing the first half of the marathon backwards. Following an uphill 13.1 miles, there was a well-earned breakfast enjoyed in Greenwich along with some 9am pints - marathon day is all about fuelling after all!
Race day dawns: Cool, cloudy, and electric
Near perfect running conditions greeted our runners as they began to descend on the depths of South East London, it was a cool and cloudy 8 degrees albeit with a fair bit off wind which was definitely noticeable with the start line sitting on an exposed heath and the final hour before go time seemingly dragging on.
As the clocks reached 10am, runners set off on their journey towards the Mall and were to be greeted by an electric atmosphere out across the course with Bandit cheer squads spread across the city.
FRC Finishers: From first-timers to age category champions
We had over 35 runners complete the marathon, from first time marathoners through to marathon veterans and there was some great results and plenty of PBs throughout the field. Firstly, a shout out to Charlie Sandison who was running in the elite race for the first time and finished in a superb time of 2:20:11.
Our two club marathon places this year went to Lauren Feltham and Sam Kelly. Lauren, who was completing her first marathon, finished in an awesome 5:11:22 and Sam managed a big 5+ minute PB to come home in 2:50:40. However, performance of the day has to go to Alice Riddell-Webster, who finished in 2:58:15 and came first in her age category - an absolute inspiration, I’m sure all would agree!
Post-race relief: Sharing stories, pints, and achy legs
Â
Post race there were plenty of hugs, stories, pints and lots of moaning about achy legs shared both at the Theodore Bullfrog and also back at Sambrooks. All in all, an awesome day out and another big thanks from us runners to all those fab spectators for being the best cheer squad ever!
Results
We had 38 runners represent Fulham Running Club at the London Marathon 2024 – below are the results by last name.
Onwards and upwards: Denmark and Scotland await!
Next over to Copenhagen and Edinburgh to round off the Spring marathons where there are set to be big FRC contingents taking part - good luck guys!
